In an effort to internationalise the game, a group of nutcases periodically revise the allowed vocabulary. Scrabble vocabulary developed into a bizarre jargon claimed to cover words from other languages. If you only play with friends, use any dictionary without the word "Scrabble" on its cover. This blog is primarily concerned with competitive Scrabble and the incompetence of some of its custodians..

OLGA FROM THE VOLGA

Strong rumours are spreading fast within the QLD scrabble community and elsewhere. There are claims that a very stubborn strain of the flu virus is being dispensed from a health food store in Brisbane. The new flu has been nicknamed “Olga from the Volga”. It is thought that the viral infection is also reinforced by bacterial support.

If these claims are correct, and I tend to believe they are, I would strongly recommend what my family doctor prescribed for me, after a two-week suffering period:

Aspen Pharma's "Moxiclav Duo Forte 875/125",
(or Sandoz equivalent: "Curam Duo Forte 875mg/125mg").
It is a combination of amoxycillin and clavulanic acid.

This is a course of a strong antibiotic in the form of ten tablets to be taken twice a day for 5 days, followed by another precautionary repeat of the same course.

I am half-way through the first course. The initial improvement is very promising.

So, please take the matter seriously, if you happen to cop the dangerous "Olga from the Volga", or came too close to its principal distributer during a scrabble tournament.

THE SCRABBLE ASYLUM, Far North

David More is an enigmatic simple pleasant person, if you don’t rub him the wrong way. He shares a two bedroom apartment with a cat. There is no love lost between me and the cat, but that doesn’t prevent David from insisting on having me as his guest, rather than let me stay in a nearby motel.

David organised a pleasant and quite successful tournament at Labrador on 26/04/2015, which I attended. It attracted 56 players, which was a record attendance for a non-major event, unmatched in QLD for a very long time. Check the list of 2014 tournament attendance below.

Encouraged by the surprising success of his tournament, David thought of organising another Labrador tournament later in 2015, in order to help the committee of ASPA (QLD) boost their overall attendance for 2015. When he applied for approval by the grudging committee, he was told that there was no room for another tournament in 2015, because QLD can only run a maximum of one tournament a fortnight, even though past track record of several of those tournaments shows attendance of only half a dozen players.

My question to the sages who took the strange decision is: Why not change one of the dubious fund raisers on the Calendar to another Labrador tournament, and collect the larger proceeds as funds raised? Look at the Calendar below and see for yourself how those fund raisers, concocted in a hurry, are still lacking organisation and suitable venues:

HOW I CAME TO PLAY SCRABBLE

Very few people would disagree with the fact that scrabble is an intriguing and enjoyable game. When I played it with my children, a few decades ago, I imposed several house rules on the very old thick Oxford dictionary we had. The following were disallowed:
Capitalised proper names
Abbreviations
Hyphenated words
Archaic words
Colloquial words
Acronyms
Abbreviations
All foreign language words

As such, scrabble doubled as a linguistic teaching aid, both for my growing children and for myself, being a new-comer to the hard-to-master but beautiful language.

As a retiree, the word “scrabble” caught my eye in an advertisement in the local paper. I made enquiries with Val Hardiman and got information about her group. Five years later, I headed to the address given. There, I made a gross mistake by joining a “beginners group” run by another lady. All I learnt as a “beginner” was that the game had been mutilated. It became quite different from the refined version I played with my children. The lady in charge had the habit of peeking into the bag, for educational purposes, in order to demonstrate that it was possible to have multiple bingos in a single game. She enjoyed the ohs and wows of the captive beginners, every time she tossed down one of her bingos.

It didn’t take long before I moved to Val’s group. Val Hardiman is a real mature old lady that commands respect. Her game is most enjoyable, to the extent that I can wrench a win from her every now and then! She knows the rules of the game and adheres to them. Unlike some other dubious players, she lifts the bag high with no signs of fatigue at her mature age. She acts like a magnet that attracts other players, who travel a fair distance to join us. We have a spacious room with kitchen facilities. We are within walking distance from Watsonia Railway Station. We are a functioning club, unlike the many dysfunctional clubs, existing only on a hopeful club list. New members are always welcome, we cater for all levels :

THE SCRABBLE ASYLUM, gossiping old women

Scrabble players are not exactly a representative sample of society at large. Gossiping old women constitute a large majority of ASPA membership.

During a three-day tournament (Vic Champs 2015), I was asked by Carol J., the arch Victorian gossip machine, to have a word in private. She told me that I called another player a cheat. I asked her, “To whom did I say that?”.  After a bit of hesitation, she said, “John R.”. I took her over to John and asked him while pointing at her, “Did you tell her that I said to you that another player is a cheat?”. The reply by John was not important. It would have made no difference to the situation if he said "yes" or "no". So, I turned to Carol and said, “Go away!”. I left the scene in disgust. It was not the first, and would not be the last attempt by Carol to try to implicate me in a contrived incident. Such attempts are her only hope to regain some credibility after losing in court.

I made further inquiries on the day. It transpired that another gossiping ancient woman (R from QLD, who unluckily survived WW2) had been eavesdropping on a private conversation. Carol did not have the wisdom to differentiate between hearsay gossip and a written claim of a real incident to be investigated.

THE SCRABBLE ASYLUM, another manifestation

Below is an intact copy of a comment by Mr Frank Csarics. It was meant to be a comment on my post “Lessons from the Past”. But because Mr Csarics belongs to an older generation, much younger than me still, he inadvertently posted his comment under a wrong post. Mr Csarics, for those who don’t know him, is usually quiet and sensible; that is of course if you ignore his comment below, and if I ignore his bizarre attitude on Monday 08/06/2015.
On that particular Monday, between scrabble games, he came fuming to shout at me, “You stay away from my friend, or else...”. I didn’t know to which friend his reference was made. My spontaneous reply was not exactly friendly, upon which he went back to the spot he came from. A short time later, he came back and apologised requesting me to turn the page and to forget the past. I was bewildered and almost speechless, simply because there has never been any previous acrimony between us at any stage in the past. We only played 2 scrabble games in 10 years. However, I agreed to forget the mysterious past he imagined, accepted his apology and shock his hand in confirmation of turning the virtual page.
Here is the 'copy and paste' comment of Mr Csarics:

Frank Csarics has left a new comment on your post "MEANING OF "JUXTAPOSE"":
Mohammed re : Lessons from the past ", your other versions of reality, and your repeated claims that the majority of the members of ASPA (Vic) are ignorant.

Now, Jimmy, until I read some of your many hallucinogenic fuelled posts, I believed I was a member of one large group of informed, very contented, like minded, respectable and very honest people. These are the types of people who make ASPA (Vic ) one great association to be a proud member of.

Suddenly, after over 27 years of being involved with these same bright, happily accommodating ASPA (Vic ) people, you have been writing for all the world to read that, based on your perceived " hindsight wisdom" ( citations required ) I learn from you that I'm ignorant.

I find you calling me ignorant to be very offensive and extremely insulting.

Further, Jimmy, I have to request from you, without prejudice, nor any malice whatsoever intended towards you, an answer, because of you constantly deliberately denigrating me in writing on the internet for everyone in the world to read when referring to me as being a memeber of the ignorant majority of ASPA ( Vic ) this : are you a plagiarist?

Your posts appear to be written as a second person plagiarisation, of an inmate, from the classic 1962 novel by Ken Kesey, which was set in Oregon, USA.

It is absolutely essential for me to know precisely, in full detail, and for my own peace of mind, why you specifically single me out, as a collective majority memeber of APA ( Vic ), that you called me ignorant.

It is not unreasonable for me to assume that ALL of the ASPA ( Vic ) members you continuously refer to as being " the ignorant majority " will be eagerly waiting for you, Jimmy, to clearly explain to me, and everyone else INDIVIDUALLY, why we, as you continue to claim so assertively on the internet, are all ignorant.

I, for one, would like to know what it is I'm supposed to be ignorant of.

May you find eternal peace whilst on your endless wisdom seeking journey.

Frank Csarics

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My reply to Mr Csarics is:

The best time to understand what you are reading is when you are sober. I will be waiting for another apology, after you do a bit of re-reading and a better understanding of what has been, and still is, going on in your much vaunted association. Otherwise, it would be better for the two of us if our orbits never cross or overlap.

MEANING OF "JUXTAPOSE"

Juxtapose is a word I never wanted to make part of my usable vocab. It means to put side by side, especially when the intended use of the peculiar word is to highlight cramming together different or incompatible items.

I have recently seen the word misused by a scrabble player to mean “exchange positions” in the sentence below:

The only way that made sense was that I had misspelled DIAPASE by juxtaposing the "IA".

Well, whether it’s  “DIAPASE” or “DAIPASE”, the A and the I are juxtaposed in both words.

English, being a second language for me, always puts me on my toes when I feel like using unfamiliar words, for the sake of using them. Knowing words is one thing, but knowing how to use the right word is another story. The right word in the above context would  be "transposing" rather than "juxtaposing".

LESSONS FROM THE PAST

Under this post, you will find an intact circular sent to ASPA(Vic) members in 2011. Now, hindsight wisdom tells me that I should have never tried to communicate collectively, by email or otherwise, with this mostly uninformed mob.

The Associations Incorporation Act 1981 has since been replaced by the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012. If you have a good look at the two acts, you would feel as if the reforms made were fashioned on my scrabble court case against the committee of ASPA (Vic). There must have been a multitude of offensive misconduct committed by committees of other incorporated associations, that made reform necessary. But whatever the case may be, the committee of ASPA (Vic) stand out as the most likely candidates for ‘taking the cake’.

After the dust settled, the informed minority remain informed and the ignorant majority remain ignorant. The last resort for the remaining remnants of the 2008 committee (5 members out of the current 9) is to desperately hang on to their contrived cheating story, relying on the fact that the unknowing are happy to believe the unbelievable and ignore the testimony of GW. To refute the cheating allegations, I don't rely on my own recollection of the silly story. I rely on GW, being an accidental eye witness, who happened to be the TD at the time.

Incidentally, relations with GW have since soured because of me divulging what he thought should have been a confidential conversation. Nevertheless, GW belongs to the dignified honest type who would never deny what he told me, if you corner him and ask him directly about it. His only confusing problem is his desire to remain on good terms with all culprits. This is certainly not my problem. As the Americans would say, 'i dont give a rats ass' about them. They erred, lied, denied and never apologised. Any smart alec member of ASPA on a national level, like GL from WA, can try to stretch their limited imagination and think of being in my place. But that is too hard, verging on the impossible for most.

I am happy with the small number of ASPA members who became very close friends. I will simply ignore the rest. If you happen to be in the grey area by mistake and would wish to be out of it, the onus is on you to take the first step, I am not going to take it.

=====================================================

Here is the  2011  intact circular, including text colours:

I really feel a bit embarrassed that I have to continue forwarding similar messages to such a large number of ASPA members. However, I also feel that keeping you informed is quite beneficial for our association in the long term. It might teach members of some committees that their presumed power over members is also subjected to common law. It teaches tournament directors how to act or react in certain situations. It teaches us members how to guard our rights and to be fully aware of our obligations towards our fellow members. I strongly believe that when the dust of this case settles, a few of us, not excluding myself, will become wiser.

Since my last circular, I received email responses from two members, to which I responded as follows:

Dear Mohammed,

It sounds very clear to me by your own rendition of the events, that you are a trouble-maker of the highest calibre. I resent the fact that you have deigned to forward to me this diatribe concerning your obvious efforts to destabilise a wonderful Association. Whether you cheated or not, is the very least of the concerns as far as I can determine. Your ungallant and chivalrousness behaviour toward respected, elderly members of the Scrabble Players Association is enough to attract a life-time ban in my opinion. I also resent the fact that you have somehow attained my personal email address in an attempt to influence me with your blatant propaganda.

The fact that you wish to pursue a course of action that will lead to court action, further illuminates your troublesome nature to which I can only add my complete condemnation. Had you not have forwarded this material I may have given you the benefit of the doubt, but it is glaringly obvious that you are portrayed in exactly the correct light by the crystal clear testimonies from reputable members. The odds were stacked against you, and instead of taking it on board with good grace, you have foolishly mounted a losing campaign against an Association I love and admire, once more showing your true colours. I wish you the very worst in your endeavours and thank you to refrain from any further communication to my personal email address.

Josef Peeters.

My Reply:

Dear Josef,

I am terribly sorry that your email inadvertently found its way to my emailing list. It must have been copied from an old scrabble emailing list. You possibly were an active member of the scrabble community, before my time as a scrabble player. I don’t think that I have ever known or met you, regardless of the fact that your message is trying to tell me that you think you do know much about me.

Anyway, I am glad we never met. Your email address has been removed from my emailing list. The word “unsubscribe”, instead of your uninformed diatribe, could have achieved the same result.

Mohammed Hegazi

On 11 October 2011 16:14, Mary McMahon wrote:

G'day Mohammed,

We have never had an unpleasant encounter during a game or at any other time.

However, I have several times driven home with my elderly passengers complaining bitterly about the way you had treated them during their games.  Unfortunately the people who are most vulnerable to standover tactics (and I'm sorry but that is what it amounted to as far as they were concerned) are the very people who will not be able to stand up to be counted just by the fact of the very timidity that left them open to distress.  No I am not going to give you their names and in fact some of them are no longer able to play competitively (and just to be clear I am in no way blaming you for that).

Mohammed, I find it very difficult to speak about racial or social differences so please believe that I am trying very hard not to be offensive.  Harry made a point in his email to all the members that rang a bell with me.  He spoke about "difference" which I could only interpret as relating to your background.  Having been bullied at work for years when I was vulnerable to depression after a work injury I agree that being ostracised is devasting personally.  Having said that, I do wonder if your background has led you to treat women differently to what is the accepted norm in Australia now and I don't seem to have heard of many incidents with men.  This is the reason why it had to be a secret ballot to allow everyone to have a say, if they wanted to, without fear of reprisal.  And after all, with all government elections from local to federal being by secret ballot I don't see that us having one could be construed as offensive.

But Katie's behaviour I can also understand.  I have some times regretted not speaking out at the time about things I have seen at work or socially (not at Scrabble) and I can appreciate that it can weigh on her enough to finally have to speak up about it.

I hope we can continue to exchange a pleasant few words when we meet at tournaments.

Mary

* I believe that under distress, Mary meant to write the word “devastating”, rather than “devasting”, the latter word would surely bounce off Zyzzyva.

My reply:

Hi Mary,

I am really astonished and rather saddened by your stated or inferred negative remarks. If you personally did not have any unpleasant encounters with me, why do you flatly assume and believe that I have a different attitude towards women? Every story has two sides to it. Why are you so willing to believe only one side?

Any incidence of unpleasant attitude towards a scrabble player, man or woman, would be in the case of persistent cheating. Every case had its own circumstances. The majority of players I competed against happen to be women. Therefore, the majority of people who tried to cheat against me were women. Since you are referring to anonymous hearsay, I cannot be any more specific.

I checked my tournament records and could not single out women who have since given up playing. Check again with your misleading sources.

You make it sound like I would threaten women! My side of the stories you heard is detailed here:

I am not aware of what Harry circulated about me. As far as I know, Harry is offended by the stand of the Committee who falsely accused me of cheating. He is using my case as an example in order to revise the constitution for the purpose of incorporating legally valid methods of handling alleged cheating. My court case against Scrabble Victoria is a separate issue that has nothing to do with Harry's work.

Finally:

“But Katie's behaviour I can also understand.  I have some times regretted not speaking out at the time about things I have seen at work or socially (not at Scrabble) and I can appreciate that it can weigh on her enough to finally have to speak up about it.”

Are you inferring that Katie Rowe saw me cheat and was distressed?

Mohammed
